Storytelling began for me at six years old when my first grade teacher, Mrs. Carson entered me into the district UIL Storytelling competition to represent my school. The competition consisted of a teacher reading a story to all the little six year old competitors then one by one going into another room and re-telling that story in our own way before a panel of scary looking and old judges! I say "old", they were probably younger than I am now, but you know "old" to a six year old is anything over thirty, or maybe twelve!
I remember being "on-deck" in the hallway while one kid was inside the scary judge room and another was in line in front of me to go in next. That child was so frightened he literally wet his pants and the floor! He was taken out by some sweet-souled teacher who tried desperately to keep his humiliation from further scrutiny. Before the janitor could arrive with a bucket and mop, I took a giant step across the "pool of fear" in the hallway, entered that room and began to re-tell the story in my way. "My way" meant I re-told the story with great enthusiasm and I'm sure massive doses of hyperbole and grandeur, but I knew no matter what happened my day would be better than that poor kid who wet the floor a few minutes before. I knew I wasn't coming in last that day, and if I'm being totally honest, I'm pretty sure I knew I was the best story-teller at the competition. I still have that blue ribbon to prove it! ; )
I moved on from story telling to poetry and prose followed by ready-writing and in high school I focused on theatre and speech. Winning awards for all of those categories doesn't buy me a cup of copy today or prove to you that I am the copywriter you should hire right now! But, it does give you an idea of how much storytelling has been a part of me my entire life.
I believe I was born to tell YOUR story! I am persuasive, enthusiastic, a little on the quirky side and filled with incredible life experience both in my personal and work life. I am diverse in experience, knowledge and application.
I have written copy for more than fifty radio and TV commercials, infomercials, pages and pages of website content, email campaigns, newsletters, social media posts, sales letters and print ads including billboard campaigns.
Please excuse me as I dig through my old files for proof of some of this writing to share with you on this page. Come back soon to see some samples!
